EV Charger Rebates & Tax Credits
Installing a home EV charger is one of the best-supported electrical upgrades for rebates and credits. Here's what's currently available:
Federal Tax Credit — Section 30C
Up to $1,000The Inflation Reduction Act extended and expanded the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit. Homeowners can claim 30% of the combined cost of the EV charger hardware and installation, up to $1,000 for residential property. This is a tax credit (not a deduction), meaning it directly reduces your tax bill dollar-for-dollar.
Consult your tax advisor for qualification requirements. The credit applies to new installations at your primary or secondary residence.
WE Energies EV Rebate Program
VariesWE Energies (Wisconsin Electric) offers rebate programs for residential EV charger installation for their customers. Programs include equipment rebates and may include off-peak charging rate incentives. Contact WE Energies directly or visit their website for current program details and eligibility requirements.
Alliant Energy EV Programs
VariesAlliant Energy serves portions of Wisconsin and offers programs for EV customers, including rebates on Level 2 charger equipment and special EV time-of-use rate plans. Contact Alliant Energy to verify current program availability and whether your address qualifies.
Madison Gas & Electric (MGE) Programs
VariesMGE customers in Dane County and nearby areas have access to EV rebate and rate programs. If your service is through MGE, check their current residential EV programs for charger rebates and special rate options.
Energy Efficiency Credits & Programs
Inflation Reduction Act — Home Energy Credits
Up to $600/itemThe IRA's Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Section 25C) provides credits for qualifying electrical upgrades including electrical panel upgrades required to support other qualifying improvements, and home energy audits. The credit is 30% of costs, capped at $600 per item category annually ($1,200 aggregate per year for most improvements).
Requirements are specific — work with a tax professional to determine what qualifies. Panel upgrades specifically must support other qualifying efficiency improvements to be eligible.
Wisconsin Focus on Energy
Statewide ProgramFocus on Energy is Wisconsin's statewide energy efficiency program, funded by Wisconsin utilities. It offers rebates for qualifying energy efficiency upgrades including certain lighting, insulation, and home improvement projects. While not all electrical work qualifies directly, projects that reduce energy consumption may be eligible. Visit focusonenergy.com or contact your utility to see current offerings.
Generator & Backup Power Incentives
There are currently no direct federal rebates specifically for standby generator installation. However, some efficiency-related credits may apply depending on how the generator interfaces with your home energy system:
- Homes with solar-plus-storage systems may qualify for the federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for battery storage.
- Some battery backup systems (not traditional generators) may qualify for home energy storage credits under the IRA.
- Natural gas line extension costs for generator fuel supply are typically not eligible for credits.
The primary financial benefit of a standby generator is protection against losses from extended outages (spoiled food, burst pipes, inability to work from home) — which may outweigh the direct cost in Wisconsin's storm-prone climate.

Rebate programs change frequently. Program availability, amounts, and eligibility requirements are set by utilities, state agencies, and federal law — all of which can change. The information on this page is provided for general guidance and may not reflect the most current program status.
Always verify current availability, terms, and eligibility directly with your utility provider or a qualified tax advisor before making purchasing decisions based on available rebates.
