Whole-Home Surge Protector vs. Lightning Rod: Do You Need Both?

These are two completely different products solving two completely different problems — and confusion between them costs Wisconsin homeowners thousands every year. Here's what each does, what it doesn't do, and which one (or both) your house needs.
The Short Answer
A lightning rod intercepts a direct strike and routes the current to ground — protecting your structure from fire and physical damage. A whole-home surge protector clamps voltage spikes coming through your power lines — protecting your electronics from frying. They do not overlap. If lightning is a real risk at your address (and in Wisconsin, it is), you want both.
What a Lightning Rod Actually Does
An air terminal (the technical name for a lightning rod) is a copper or aluminum point mounted at the highest part of your structure, connected through heavy-gauge down conductors to ground rods driven into the earth. When lightning strikes, the rod gives the current the path of least resistance — straight down the conductor to ground — instead of through your shingles, framing, wiring, and pipes.
What it protects: your house from catching fire, your roof from being shredded, your gas lines from arcing, your family from a strike-induced explosion.
What it doesn't protect: your TV, your smart thermostat, your computer, your refrigerator electronics. Even a perfectly-functioning lightning rod sends millions of volts to ground a few feet from your service panel — some of that energy will inductively couple into your wiring.
What Whole-Home Surge Protection Actually Does
A whole-home surge protector (Type 1 or Type 2 SPD) installs at your meter or panel. When voltage on your incoming power lines exceeds a threshold (typically 600–1000 V), it shorts the excess to ground in nanoseconds, clamping voltage back down to something your electronics can survive.
Surges come from:
- Nearby lightning strikes (even ones that don't hit your house)
- Utility grid switching
- Transformer failures
- Downed power lines
- Large motor cycling (AC compressors, well pumps)
What it protects: TVs, computers, HVAC control boards, smart-home devices, garage door openers, well pumps, washing machines, anything with a circuit board.
What it doesn't protect: your house from a direct strike. SPDs are rated in joules — a few thousand to maybe 60,000. A direct lightning strike delivers millions of joules. The SPD will sacrifice itself and still let the structure damage happen.
