NFPA 780 Explained: The Standard That Governs Lightning Protection

Every reputable lightning protection installer references NFPA 780. But what is it, why does your insurance carrier care, and what does "NFPA 780 compliant" actually mean? Here's the plain-English version.
What NFPA 780 Is
NFPA 780 is the Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems, published by the National Fire Protection Association. It's revised on a 3-year cycle (current edition: 2023) and it's the document referenced by:
- The International Building Code
- UL 96A (Master Label certification)
- FM Global property insurance
- Most U.S. residential and ag insurance carriers
- Wisconsin commercial property AHJs (Authorities Having Jurisdiction)
What It Covers
NFPA 780 specifies the physical requirements for every component of a lightning protection system: air terminal materials and spacing, conductor types and routing, ground rod depth and bonding, surge protection requirements, and how to do an annex L risk assessment. It also defines maintenance and inspection cycles.
Why "NFPA 780 Compliant" Matters
A system installed to NFPA 780 is:
- Insurable — Most ag and commercial policies reference NFPA 780 as the minimum standard for LPS-dependent coverage
- Inspectable — Any licensed inspector can audit it and produce a code-referenced report
- UL Master Label eligible — If your insurer or AHJ requires it, the system can be inspected and labeled
- Predictable — Every component is sized for the actual lightning current it might see, not guess-and-hope
What's Inside an NFPA 780 Installation
The core requirements:
- Air terminals (rods) — Class I (for buildings ≤ 75 ft) or Class II (taller). Spacing: max 20 ft apart on flat roofs, 25 ft on ridge/eave lines.
- Down conductors — Min 2 per structure, max 100 ft apart. Materials: copper or aluminum, sized per Class I/II.
- Ground terminations — One per down conductor, min 10 ft copper-clad rod, bonded in single-point ground.
- Bonding — All metal building components within 6 ft of a down conductor must be bonded to the LPS.
- Surge protection — Type 1 SPDs at all service entrances; Type 2 at distribution panels.
- Inspection — Visual annually; full inspection (incl. ground resistance) every 3–5 years.
What the Standard Won't Tell You
NFPA 780 is a how document, not a whether document. Annex L includes a risk assessment that helps you decide if a structure needs LPS in the first place. Most Wisconsin farms, barns, tall houses, and commercial buildings score well above the threshold — meaning the risk assessment recommends protection.

NFPA 780 doesn't require a specific license, but in practice the work is done by licensed electricians or LPS-specialty contractors.
