The Three Lightning-Related Losses on a Farm

Lightning damage on a working farm splits into three buckets:

  1. Structural — barn fires, silo damage, scorched siding, blown-out service entrances
  2. Equipment — fried milking parlor controls, ventilation fans, feed delivery PLCs, well pumps, grain dryer electronics, livestock waterers
  3. Livestock — animals killed by direct strike or by step voltage (lethal voltage difference across an animal's feet when current flows through wet ground)

What Most Ag Policies Cover

  5. Equipotential bonding under barn and parlor floors where livestock stand

Step Voltage: The Silent Killer

This is the most under-discussed risk on a Wisconsin farm. When lightning current flows through the ground around a livestock barn, the voltage difference between an animal's front and back feet can be lethal — animals never have to be touched by the strike. Equipotential bonding (a wire mesh under the barn floor, bonded to the same ground as the rest of the LPS) eliminates the voltage difference.
